Tobacco ads persuade teens to smoke

Advertisements for tobacco products do persuade teenagers to start smoking, new research has found.
According to the findings from Germany, the risk of taking up smoking jumps by almost 40% for every 10 ads seen. To read more about this article click here.

The sight of smokers huddled around the doorways of pubs and restaurants is all too common since smoking was banned in all Irish workplaces in 2004. Mid-Summers Night Ball
Alpha-1 Fundraiser:
The Mid-Summer's Night Ball in the Spa Hotel Lucan on the 23rd of June 2012.
There will be a competition for the best dressed lady.
Tickets €25, doors at 8.30 with dinner at 9.30.

Celtic Connection 2012

Every year the US Alpha-1 Foundation organise a Celtic Connection dinner around St. Patrick's Day. The event features an Irish dinner, music and dancing along with the presentation of the Irish Shilleagh award. This award is presented to researchers and doctors who are leaders in the field of Alpha-1 research.

This year the award was presented to Professor Gerry McElvaney. Prof. McElvaney is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the RCSI. He also runs the only dedicated Alpha-1 clinic in Ireland based at Beaumont Hospital. You can read the full article here.

 
Rare Disease Day 2012

The 29th of February 2012 is the 5th International Rare Disease Day, and to raise awareness of this day a promotional video was recorded featuring people who have a rare disease. The video can be seen here. The video was shot in Dublin and includes one of our Alpha-1 patients, Josephine McGuirk. You can read Josephine's story in her own words here.

 
Love your Lungs

Love Your Lungs Campaign

On Monday the 13th of February 2012 a group of Irish charities teamed up with Olympic Champion Dr. Ronnie Delany to promote healthy lungs by highlighting symptoms of lung disease and the importance of early intervention.  The Irish Lung Health Alliance includes:

 - Irish Lung Fibrosis Association

What is Alpha-1 Antitrypsin?

Alpha-1 antitrypsin is an important protein produced by the liver, which is released into the bloodstream and travels to the lungs. Once inside the lungs it provides protection from the destructive effects of infections and harmful irritants, particularly tobacco smoke.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic condition which, along with cystic fibrosis, is the commonest genetic lung disease in Ireland. It severely affects more than 2,000 people nationally, with another 10,000 individuals also at risk of lung and liver disease. It is the only proven genetic risk factor for COPD.
