Legislation for the Plain Packaging of Tobacco Products in Ireland

Ireland follows Australia as the second country globally to legislate for the plain packaging of tobacco products.

Dr Reilly said while many arguments will be made against the move, he is confident the legislation will be enacted early next year and supported purely by the fact that it will save lives.

Under the reform, cigarette boxes in Ireland will be a generic size and colour, and will only feature the brand name on the bottom and a large picture showing the harmful effects of cigarettes, like rotting lungs. To read more about this article click here.

Fourth International Alpha-1 Patient Congress

The 4th International Patient Congress on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency is being held in Barcelona on the weekend of April 12th - 13th, 2013.

Irish Lung Health Alliance Presents to Oireachtas Health Committee

The Committee on Health and Children discussed measures to improve lung health awareness and increase lung health promotion efforts when it met with representatives from the Irish Lung Health Alliance on Thursday, 7th February 2013. The Alpha One Foundation was one of six health charities that presented on the day. The Oireachtas Health Committee consists of TDs and Senators from all the political parties.

Fourth International Alpha-1 Patient Congress April 11th - 13th

Dear Friends of Alpha-1,

In April 1963, Swedish researchers Carl-Bertil Laurell and Sten Eriksson published their landmark research on the discovery of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discovery, the Fourth International Alpha-1 Patient Congress and an international Research Conference on Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency will be held in Barcelona, Spain, April 11th - 13th, 2013.

Alpha-1 Chopin Award 2012

A large crowd attended our 2nd Annual Alpha-1 Chopin Award which took place on Thursday 15th November in the Oak Room of the Mansion House in Dublin. This annual competition is becoming a permanent fixture on the Dublin cultural calendar and we are indebted to the Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Naoise Ó Muirí for the continued use of the historic Oak Room.

What is Alpha-1 Antitrypsin?

Alpha-1 antitrypsin is an important protein produced by the liver, which is released into the bloodstream and travels to the lungs. Once inside the lungs it provides protection from the destructive effects of infections and harmful irritants, particularly tobacco smoke.

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (Alpha-1) is a genetic condition which, along with cystic fibrosis, is the commonest genetic lung disease in Ireland. It severely affects more than 2,000 people nationally, with another 10,000 individuals also at risk of lung and liver disease. It is the only proven genetic risk factor for COPD.
