The Alpha One Foundation had a stand at the Irish Thoracic Society Annual Scientific Meeting on Friday and Saturday. This meeting is attended by Nurses, Scientists, Doctors and Consultants who have an interest in the lungs and lung disease.

Research performed and part-funded by the Alpha One Foundation has shown that Ireland has one of the highest prevalences in the world of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. The study revealed 1 in 25 Irish individuals are carriers of Alpha-1. A startling 3,000 people on the island of Ireland are affected by the most severe form of Alpha-1, with a further 12,000 individuals suffering from a less severe form.

The annual Alpha One Foundation Chopin Award to highlight Alpha-1 and lung disease research will take place in The Oak Room of the Mansion House, Dublin, on Thursday, November 17th at 7.00 pm.
